Should you use a CV template?

There are many, many providers of CV templates on the internet and the choice and range can be incredibly confusing.  When selecting a template you need to be clear about which format actually suits your particular circumstances, which format will market your skills and experience most effectively.

There are different possible formats depending on how you choose to present yourself.  There is the chronological format which shows your career history in reverse chronological order, the functional format which focuses on your specific skill set, and the hybrid which is a combination of the two.

The chronological format suit with a steady history of career progression, especially if it is in the same profession. It shows continuing development and achievement.

The functional format suits those for whom showing what current skills and experience they have is more important than showing steady career progression.

The hybrid is a useful combination of the two in which you can show your key skills backed up by sound career progression and achievement.

When choosing or adapting a template you should keep the above potential formats in mind depending on how you decide to market yourself.
